Approaches to aid communication and learning

Communication and Education

Communication difficulties and stress can be the causes of some types of behaviour that challenges and at The Richardson Partnership, we use different approaches to aid communication and learning, depending on the needs of the individual. For example:

PECS - Picture Exchange Communication System

PECS was designed to allow people with Autism and other communication difficulties to initiate communication. PECS begins with teaching students to present a picture of a desired item to a teacher, who will exchange it for the item itself. There are six stages in the teaching of PECS which progress from initiating communication using pictures to developing speech.

TEACCH – Treatment & Education of Autistic & Related Communication-handicapped Children

TEACHH is a complete programme using different techniques including room layout and visual cues to help people with Autism and related communication difficulties to fulfil their potential. It works by enabling them to process information in the ways that they find easiest.

Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. Using programmes such as Makaton can help to take away the frustration of not being able to communicate properly, enabling individuals to connect with other people and the world around them.

According to Mencap, only 1 in 10 people with a learning disability are in employment. We are helping our service users to develop skills for learning, employment and for life while gaining qualifications. RPC has become a registered centre with ASDAN (Awards Scheme Development & Accreditation Network) enabling us to provide ASDAN programmes for our service users in-house. More information about ASDAN is available here.
